Meet Eugene Groenhof, our August Resident of the Month! Eugene was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and grew up in beautiful Holland, home to Michigan’s much-photographed Big Red Lighthouse, which connects Lake Macatawa to Lake Michigan.
Eugene has called New Hope Valley’s West Campus home for nearly 3 years, stating, “We decided based on recommendations from several sources. After visiting 4 or 5 other communities, we decided on New Hope Valley – they have large, beautiful apartments. Also, my wife, Hazel, and I were able to continue to live together despite her needing assisted living.”
Eugene and Hazel have been married for almost 61 years and have two grown, married daughters who live nearby, Lisa and Kristen. They also have five grandchildren, three of whom are married, and three great-grandchildren.
Before retiring, Eugene was a chemist for Dow Corning for 26 years.
“After taking an early retirement, I went on to work for the church. I was a choir director. I also played the organ, piano, and handbells,” said Eugene.
So, it’s not surprising that he enjoys playing the piano or organ for his fellow residents at New Hope Valley.
Music isn’t Eugene’s only hobby; he also loves rock hounding or searching for and collecting rocks, fossils, or minerals.
“I have traveled all over North America digging for gemstones and minerals,” he said.
When we asked Eugene what his favorite meal is at New Hope Valley, he answered, “Chili,” and then added, “Dessert,” with a sly grin.
Before we finished chatting with Eugene, he said, “I want to thank all the many resident and staff friends who have provided kindness and emotional support to my wife and me.”
“Eugene is not just a resident; he is a pillar to our community,” said Cathy Aiello, New Hope Valley West Campus Life Enrichment Director. He volunteers his time preaching for our Bible study group, giving many residents spiritual support. Eugene is also a talented piano player. He uses his musical skills to entertain us during our community birthday parties and fills in if one of our entertainers cancels during Happy Hour. Thank you, Eugene!”
