Introducing the John Vernon Skinner Dog Park

A Legacy of Love and Loyalty

In January of 2021, John and Jan Skinner moved into a Traditions of Columbus villa. Winter weather and the pandemic were doing their darnedest to keep us all indoors, but John had his walks with Blue.

You may have seen them, two old friends who made their rounds and earned a place in the hearts of the construction crew and front lobby. John and his dog Blue’s walks were cathartic and social, a joyful outlet for both of them. They continued for as long as the duo could muster, until John’s fading memory made it difficult to give Blue what he needed. The Skinner family knew Blue deserved the best and worked to find a loving new home nearby. And while John missed his forever friend, he took every chance to shower the neighbor dogs with love and attention.

This summer, we bid farewell to John Skinner, the beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and consummate animal lover. What has happened since then is both remarkable and touching.

When John passed away, his family asked that anyone wishing to make a donation in his name kindly consider The Humane Society of Nashville. In the weeks to follow, more donations were made in John’s honor than at any other time in the shelter’s history.

Back at Traditions of Columbus? Jan was surrounded by supportive family and friends, and Executive Director, Stacey Gallardo had an idea. After speaking with the Skinners’ daughter, and bringing Jan and her family, neighbors and friends together, the Traditions of Columbus dog park was officially dedicated as The John Vernon Skinner Dog Park. Established in 2022 as a loving testament to man’s (and dog’s) best friend.
