Check on Your Loved Ones This Holiday Season

Kristin Townsley, with Traditions Management, was on WNEM 5 in Saginaw, Michigan, recently discussing what to look for when visiting senior loved ones this holiday season.

"Seniors still value connection. Just because they are aging make sure they still have the ability to connect and meet new people. Traditions of Saginaw does a great job of that, just allowing our people to connect and meet new friends,” Kristin says.

What To Look For When Visiting Loved Ones

This holiday season, when you are visiting your aging loved ones, here are some things to be aware of:

  • if the house is not kept up like it normally is
  • if they are not socializing like they used to
  • if they are not taking their medication or taking too much
  • if there is expired food or not enough food on hand.

Consider Senior Living as an Option

If you notice any of these things, it may be a good time to begin having a conversation with your parents or loved ones about senior living. At Traditions, socialization is one of our core values. Socialization empowers and encourages residents who may be suffering from loss and depression to regain their zest for life. We encourage residents to get involved and take part in community events and activities.

Studies show that residents who interact socially focus less on health issues than residents who remain secluded. This interaction is also suitable for intellectual stimulation. In most cases, socialization also encourages physical activity.

Purposeful interaction with family, staff, and other residents promotes friendships and positive activities for both mental and physical health.

“People can really start thriving and living and connecting with new people,” Kristin says. Remember who your loved ones are, meet them where they are, connect with them, encourage them to connect, and continue to live and thrive.”
